Easter 2017

When you think about it, the Christian faith is a bit sadistic. We sing happy songs about blood. Our primary symbol is an instrument of torture. We celebrate the fact that our hero was killed. In this special 5-week Easter series, we’ll look at why the bad news of death is at the heart of the good news of Christianity.

Jesus Died to Show God's Love

Romans 5:8; John 3:16

Pastor Drew Humphrey

In a world where love is hard to come by, the death of Jesus introduces us to a brand new reality that we can’t find anywhere else: the reality of pure, selfless, unmerited love that comes to us in our weakest moments and meets our deepest need. When we consider why Jesus died, we can’t ignore this vital and timely insight: Jesus died to show God’s love. In a love-starved world, this is incredible news.

Jesus Died to Take Our Punishment

Romans 5:9

Pastor Drew Humphrey

The justice of God is a wonderful thing to be celebrated – but only if we don’t have to be on the receiving end of it. The testimony of Scripture, however, is that we are on the receiving end of it, because we have sinned grievously against a holy God. We deserve his wrath. This is a hopeless and dreadful position in which to find ourselves. This week, we’ll consider how the death of Jesus addresses this universal human plight and brings us freedom from the punishment that we deserve.

Jesus Died to Bring Us to God

Romans 5:10-11; 1 Peter 3:18

April 2, 2017

Pastor Abraham Cremeens

We were described as enemies before we were saved in Christ.  God punishes enemies and removes them from being in his way.  Yet, in Christ, it is clear that he chooses to save some and make them his friends, reconciling them into a wonderful relationship.  This is a relationship we can rest in and enjoy because of Jesus.

Jesus Died to Purge Our Sin

1 John 1:5-9

April 9, 2017

Pastor Will Peycke

We are all dirty, stained, unclean. We’ve all tried to make our heart pure… and we’ve all failed. But you can be clean. The stain can be purged. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, God offers to cleanse you from the inside out.

Jesus Died to Defeat Death

Hebrews 2:9, 14-15

April 16, 2017

Pastor Drew Humphrey

We have one universal enemy: Death. And yet in the most astounding reversal in all of human history, Jesus suffered the sting of death, only to rise again and prove himself to be the conqueror of this enemy that has enslaved us and kept us in bondage through fear. The resurrection brings us the startlingly good news that Jesus went into the grave so that we might come out of it.
