The Image of God

God made people as the pinnacle of his entire creation. He created humanity in his image so that they would be his representatives in the world and steward it in his likeness. This reality should impact the way we view the various issues covered in this series: human value, ethnicity, gender, and singleness/marriage. In a culture that tends to see these topics in ways that are an affront to God, we want to deal with them from a biblical worldview and engage others graciously.

The Image of God and Human Value

Genesis 9:1-7

God made people as the pinnacle of his entire creation. He created humanity in his image so that they would be his representatives in the world and steward it in his likeness. This truth helps define the deep value in every human being, regardless of age or circumstances. As Christians, we are being renewwed in the image of God and empowered to value all of life according to God's good design.

The Image of God and Gender

Genesis 1:26-28

How we think about gender is become a massive cultural issue. As Christians, our starting point on this issue must be what God's word says about gender. The image of God calls us to reject transgender ideology but also to value people who claim a transgender identity.

The Image of God and Ethnicity

Ephesians 2:11-22

The image of God in us writes an equal value on all humanity, regardless of ethnicity. Sin introduced enmity, hostility, and separation – not just between sinful man and holy God, but also between people. Christ conquered sin and paid the debt so that we could be reconciled first and foremost to God the Father, but also with each other. Jesus is our peace.

The Image of God in Singleness and Marriage

1 Corinthians 7:32-35; Ephesians 5:22-27; Romans 8:28-29

The image of God is not only our starting place in creation, but it's also our destination in glory as we are being conformed to the image of his Son. While our sin nature is a focus on self, Jesus' image points in a different direction. Singleness and Marriage offer roles with unique opportunities to grow in and reflect this self-less image, and while different, each of those roles finds Jesus as the perfect role model.
