Abiding in

Light, Love, & Life

This world pulls us in many different directions, often disguised as "Christian" teaching. The call of Christ is to abide in him. As believers navigate what it is to follow Jesus in the midst of a world in darkness, John writes to arms us with truth and encourage us to be a light as Jesus is light; love as God is love; and to fellowship in the common life we have in Jesus.

Revelation that Makes a Difference

1 John 1:1- 4

Paul Briggs

June 9, 2019

The nature of Christianity is extremely practical. Eternal life is found only in Jesus the Christ who made himself known to his apostles. Those who by grace have experienced the life-transforming relationship with Him obediently make Him known to others. People from every nation, tribe and language experience a oneness of community because of the bond they share in having received life and the forgiveness of sins through God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Complete joy is experienced in seeing people trust Jesus and obey Him.

Walking in the Light

1 John 1:5-2:2

God's nature of light makes it necessary for us to walk in the light if we are to have fellowship with him. Our sin hinders that fellowship. We must not only continually confess that sin, but also foster the environment for others to confess in order to have fellowship with God and with each other.

A heretical group and their false message is being confronted in this letter. However, while confronting wrong thinking and wrong living we will also see a resounding hope: In Christ, God not only saves us by his grace, but by that same grace he is changing us.

We cannot love the world and chase after its pleasures and say we love God also. Love for the world and love for God cannot co-exist.

Similarly to our last section, this passage continues as an encouragement to remain in God no matter what comes our way. John now gives more clarity as to how we should go about remaining in God. We abide in God with a right goal, anchored in a new identity that transforms how we live.

Walking the Talk of Love

1 John 3:11- 3:24

Paul Briggs

July 21, 2019

John continues his pastoral message to his readers (followers of Jesus Christ) by reminding them of the message they have heard from the time they first heard the Gospel: to love one another. He teaches them about what to do when doubt arises in their hearts and how to live when they have every confidence that they are children of God. He concludes this section by reminding them about his purpose in writing to them: to pointthem (once again) to belief in God’s Son, Jesus Christ, and the love for oneanother that flows from the power of the indwelling Spirit of God.

Testing Spirits

1 John 4:1-6

Will Peycke

July 28, 2019

John warns his readers not to believe everyone who claims to be a spiritual teacher. Instead, they should “test the spirits” to determine whether ateacher and his message are from God. John insists that every message or teacher that does not confess Jesus as God incarnate is not from God but is instead empowered by the spirit of the antichrist. In contrast, John encourages his readers that they are from God and have already overcomethese worldly, antichrist spirits because of God’s infinitely greater Spiritliving within them.

Abiding and Spiritual Rebirth

1 John 5:1-12

Abraham Cremeens

August 11, 2019

The Christian life is the changed life because God brings about a spiritual rebirth in us. This means we are renewed—a new creation. While this is an internal change, it also expresses itself in renewed ways of faith, love, obedience, victory, and a deepening relationship with God.

God wants all of his people to walk in 100% assurance of eternal life. Thisassurance isn’t the result of our own accomplishments but rather by faith inJesus Christ, the Son of God. Our experience of eternal life also brings confidence in other areas of our lives such as prayer, our pursuit of holiness, and our relationship with God.
